UPDATE: CLICK HERE TO SEE THE DETAILS OF THE GOING OUT OF BUSINESS SALE

It is with a very heavy heart that I have to announce that Murphy’s Used Books and Media, in its current form, is going out of business.

There are a lot of reasons for this, but it boils down to a lack of revenue from in-store sales.

The first thing I want to let everyone know is that we will still be serving our community and you will still be able to buy books from us :)

But we are losing our storefront on Wilmington Pike in Kettering.

This DOES NOT impact the Dollar Book Swap at all. My father, Greg Sr. and his team are still going to be running the warehouse sale.

I always knew that the sheer size of the bookstore was ambitious, to put it mildly.

I believed (and I still believe) that we could grow into it and that the business model of offering inexpensive books to our community with trade credit for books people bring in works…

But, we only need about a third of the space to make it work.

I have been partially financing Murphy’s with income from my consulting work, but that is no longer feasible.

I had to make a choice to provide for my family or to keep this dream alive (in it’s current form.)

As much as I love all of you, I had to choose my family.

We have done a lot at Murphy’s over the past couple of years, and we couldn’t have done any of it without your support.

I believe in our community, and I believe that we have had a positive impact on it.

The absolute worst part of all of this to me, is having to eventually let go of my staff. They are truly the backbone of this place.

From the very beginning I told all of them that I wanted to build something special…

And that every single person that walked through the door deserved a warm greeting…

They believe in what we do, and their goal was to make each and every customer feel like they were coming home when they walked through our doors.

Another huge regret I have is not being able to have the events here that have become so much a part of the lives of some local families.

I wanted the kids that come to StoryTime every week to get to grow up and bring their kids to StoryTime.

I wanted my daughter to grow up to work here on the weekends to save up for a car.

I wanted to be able to walk in here every day for the rest of my life and see what you all help me build.

But none of that is what will be…

Instead, over the next several weeks we will be transitioning into our Going Out Of Business Sale.

Those of you guys with store credit are going to want to get in here to use it for sure.

Another option is to give the credit to us to distribute to local teachers.

The details of this sale will be in the FAQ on this page, but suffice it to say…. everything must go.

Now, I want to make sure one more time that you all know that we are not dying…

I sell books… It is what I do.

We will be able to continue to send out your book subscriptions and everything else.

You are still going to be hearing from me via email, and I’ll probably actually have time to write blog posts more than twice a year :)

Eventually we will have a retail space again… much more manageably sized… although still worth coming to visit.

In the meantime, I have a favor to ask you if you are a customer of the store.

Below this post please leave us a comment and let us know if Murphy’s has had an impact on you or your family.

And lastly, when you do come in to the store over the next several weeks, remember that this final time together isn’t a wake.  No one died… this version of our business just didn’t make it.

This time should be a celebration of what we all accomplished together along with the best deal you’ve ever seen from us for your book reading pleasure :)

It has been a blast to see each and every one of you come into the store.

I love you all and our work is just starting.

Frequently Asked Questions

The goal is mid-September. We are currently working it out right now. We will let you now as soon as we have a hard date.

Your store credit is still good here for as long as we are open. If you aren't able to use it by the time we close down the store, let us know and we will donate it to local teacher groups here in town.

Definitely.  We are still paying cash for textbooks and doing store credit for other things we can use, right up until we shut it down. We want to continue to get as many books as possible into the hands of folks that need them.
